Last time the party picked up some stray rats, met people (!), learned about King Thessel XV, and arrived at the entrance to the "well."

They planned for their descent into Guillaume's well, deciding who would stay topside and who would go down. After Tenkos briefly floated a plan involving ropes and horses being lowered down a pit of indeterminate depth they settled on the following:

Topside Barn
Agatha (archer)
Joseph (archer)
Timothy (axe, cook)
Tinslee & Therese (teamsters)
Horses (so many)

Topside Church

Viggo donned his magical boots! Yay! He ate his "I'm so hangry" ration for putting it on and was ready to roll. Philip lit up a torch, Indira grabbed another in one hand with her axe at the ready and took point.

They descended the low, flat, wide stairs somewhat awkwardly. Once they cleared the initial passage the wall on their right dropped away completely and each person got hit by a flash of vertigo. They couldn't see the bottom, they couldn't see the other side, and the path was narrow.

Viggo chucked a rock to see if he could hit the other side in the dark and it got a foot past the stairs and dropped straight down! They heard it clatter very quickly but were shocked at the unexpected trajectory. Viggo threw another rock and the ratfolk started to copy him, throwing a pebble or two and then a whole handful. They all clattered below.

Barthelm was worried that even though they could hear the rocks hitting that this stairwell might still be some kind of direct portal to the island of Wilhelm the Wily. He repositioned himself behind Claus so he could immediately grab him if/when Claus tried to go into it.

Claus meanwhile tried an experiment with his cane, slowly extending it over the edge. If he hadn't been prepared for it the force would have ripped the cane right out of his hands.

Claus: "You think we can leave if we keep going down? If we keep going down the stairs do you think there's a point where we won't be able to go back up the stairs?"

Tenkos pointed out that if they did get stuck they could always pursue the exit that was supposed to be at the bottom that linked up with the ratfolk village.

As they descended further they caught a glimpse of a statue perched upon a pedestal in the middle of the 40' wide stairwell. It was maybe twice the size of a person but incredibly gaunt, emaciated even. It's head was tilted back and it looked like it's mouth was open in a silent plea. It's arms were spread, palms up, plaintive. An array of sculpted stone food lay at its feet, lifelike but for the grey granite color.

The rocks got pulled down, the cane got pulled down, maybe food would work? Maybe you need to do an offering so you don't end up like the statue? They also wondered if Wilhelm the Wily / Guillaume le Galapiat would expect that reaction and arrange a terrible fate for anyone trifling with the statue. It basically turned into the "battle of wits" scene from The Princess Bride.

Viggo threw a ration over the edge but it went straight down with a splat. He caught a glimpse of something reflective towards the head and they continued around the stairs, trying to get a better look. It turned out to be a thick golden tongue in the statue's mouth.

Barthelm wanted to try and shoot an arrow really high up so that the horizontal momentum of the arrow might still enough to hit the statue's mouth despite the intense gravity. Miracle of miracles (the first of several this session), it hit!

The arrow chipped out a chunk of the gold, it popped up into the air, and then back down into the mouth. As soon as it did they heard a clicking sound as the legs on the roast turkey rotated to point straight up at the ceiling. They tried to see the chunk and chip inside the mouth from the stairs again but the tongue appeared whole as far as they could tell.

Barthelm: "You saw that the gold itself wasn't affected by this grave-it-y well, maybe the pedestal is immune." Viggo tossed another rock to test if the gravity had turned off but it dropped straight down again.

As soon as the torch illuminated the bottom of the stairs the ratfolk went down to check it out. Eye-van ate the gooped up ration off the ground and they generally poked about.

Claus wanted to experiment to see if the ultra gravity had a height requirement so he bodily Freddard (who was not happy about this), and plopped him into Barthelm's shoulders. Other than vocal annoyance the ratfolk was unharmed but the damage to Barthelm was already done; he acquired an instant layer of filth and grime in his hair. Ewww.

They found a big metal door with a thin slot and knocker centered. Barthelm gave it a check, looking for nozzles, needles, or lock bars but didn't discover anything. He noticed some writing above the slot but Claus shouted out a warning not to read it. Viggo, noticing the reaction, immediately backed away.

Sidebar: Last time they found something they thought were explosive runes Viggo almost died. LINK Afterward James and Vegas both chided themselves for not calling out what they figured were certainly Explosive Runes. Lesson learned!

Instead of directly reading it, Barthelm approached with his silver mirror and read the writing on the door backwards. He recognized the language as Cronov, from the eastern lands. It said:

GUESTS ONLY
INVITATION REQUIRED

Claus: "What if I summon a demon through the slot, then there's a demon though there?"
Everyone: "That's a terrible idea."

Barthelm wanted Edward to go through into the room, said there was a lot more food in there and mimed eating. Edward squeaked a demand, made his own chewing motions, and repeatedly held out his hand. Barthelm took out some saltfish but then chucked it into the room! While Edward was busy admiring Barthelm's cleverness Eye-Van rushed past him into the room and started to devour the fish. Barthelm encouraged him to still go in and Edward goaded Freddard into going too.

They didn't get very far.

A few moments after they entered the room a giant stone hand swiped towards Edward. Another reached out for Freddard. Fortunately for them, both grabs missed. Initiative happened, everyone basically ran away (and up the stairs), but poor Eye-Van was too far into the room to get out in one round. They grabbed him on his way past.

The whole group could hear his frantic squeaky screams suddenly get caught off, followed by softer squelching and squishing sounds.

Barthelm: "RIP Eye-Van."

The other two rats were GONE, all the way up the stairs crawling in the darkness. Sergeant Teake managed to shoo them back downstairs after a shouted conversationw with Barthelm. Barthelm in turn snuck over to close the door but didn't encounter any trouble doing so.

They had a theory that the shield is what kept the golems in the room and that if they pulled the shield out of the room then the golems would follow them out and they could push them off the stairs and let the gravity well kill them.

Tenkos: "Not-it to get the shield."

Viggo actually volunteered to dash in, grab the shield, and dash back out. His super speedy hungry boots meant that he could do it before the golems fully activated. He picked it up, noting the shiny reflective center portion was ringed by a dull, heavy matte iron.

He turned and saw in the shadows that the two golems were starting to move again. He went a few steps back towards the door and heard an awful wrench as the hinges ripped out of the metal door that Barthelm was holding. The hinges flew towards him and the door started to follow suite. Lucien, who was closest, had his shield ripped out of his hands as well. It all arced straight towards Viggo!

The hinges hit the shield first and vanished completely! Lucien's shield followed suit, colliding with the metal and disappearing. Viggo hadn't been affected by the shield's power because he had eschewed all metal since his resurrection. The heavy entry door wasn't quite as quick and Viggo hit upon a plan to use his speedy boots to keep enough distance from the door that he could get the golems between him and the door to have the door crash into them.

That's right, Viggo's plan was to stay in the room with the four smashy crushy murder golems and get a door to crash into them. He actually found it to be pretty effective! He didn't take out any of the golems but he definitely caused some damage.

Sidenote: The players raised the question of "well where does all this metal go?" I love the way their brains work, I have the best crew.

Viggo somehow narrowly avoided Eye-Van's fate. He was running back and forth and out of maybe 8 grab attempts the golems only landed two and he was able to break out of them at his first opportunity (partially thanks to advantage on the roll because of his boots). Maybe he will wear his dancing shoes more often.

Sidenote: Peanut Butter also noted that he had been playing Viggo this way before his transformation as well, somehow avoiding all kinds of horrible injuries before dying to a pair of guards that rolled crits. If they could kill him with two stabs then might as well go all in, I suppose.

Barthelm initially tried to shoot at the golems but his arrow just got pulled straight to Viggo's new toy and the arrowhead disappeared. He stepped across the door's threshold and blew his whistle, drawing attention (and a grab!) from two of the four golems. Claus' immediate reaction was to grab Barthelm and help him break the grapple and the two tumbled backward across the threshold, retreating with Lucien and the rest of their retainers in tow.

Sidenote: This was probably a direct contributor to Viggo not getting squashed. He distracted two golems for two rounds, four more attacks and it would have been enough to get Viggo I bet.

The party had a problem though because while everyone else seemed to be safe outside of the room Viggo was still stuck inside. He didn't want to bring his new shield back the way he came because it would decimate everyone else's equipment. He also wasn't sure how long he could keep up the back and forth of using the big metal door and his incredible speed to continue bashing the golems.

"What if you run out the other door?"
"Let's find out!"

He took one more swipe at the golems by standing by the other side's door (this time made out of wood with stone hinges) but rolled really low on damage. The golems all missed as well. Claus double fired his pistols into the room, relying on the metallic attraction of Viggo's shield to pull them into one of the golems. It worked!

Everyone started looking for other things they could hurl into the room and we discovered that Barthelm had one of every "weightless" thing in the equipment list! He rolled on 1 for damage with his Bag o' Nails, so it balanced out. The Teeth wanted to help but weren't sure how to proceed without crippling themselves.

Viggo decided to go for the door. It was unlocked! He popped through, closed it, and stood in the pitch black for a moment before pulling out an unlit torch with his free hand.

But that's not all! Peanut Butter reminded me about the big metal door that Viggo had been dragging about. Since he wasn't using super speed anymore it would have caught up, but did it happen before or after he closed the door? I had him roll for it, it came up as "after." He thought that was better but a big heavy sheet of metal flying relentlessly towards you isn't going to stop for a wooden door. It crashed through, creating dangerous splinters that could have done a lot of damage but somehow Viggo made his save, even with his -1 Wisdom mod. Bonkers!

Sidenote: If I had been paying enough attention I would have remembered for him to take half damage on a save but oh well, I am happy that we did it at all. And no door now.

So Viggo was across the golem room from the rest of the party but momentarily safe (albeit in the dark). The rest of the crew observed the golems heading back to their little cubbies and we ended the session. They'll have two weeks to figure out where they want to go from here.

Camp Setup: Horses in the barn, party split between the barn and the church, ratfolk out in the woods.

Last time the party had a mostly uneventful journey through the woods trailing behind their ratfolk guide until they encountered a tree with bright red fruit that jumped around and blew up with magic fireworks when they shot it with a flaming arrow.

We jumped back into things with a bunch of ratfolk running and pointing and yelling at Ashley in their language. As they got closer the party could see that the seven ratfolk were collectively dragging an old woman and the front-runner was shouting "Help!" As they got even closer they could tell that the woman appeared to be quite dead.

The ratfolk started shouting at Ashley and she started shouting back, not seeming very pleased. She managed to tell the party that Edward was not the brightest and that he was in some kind of trouble before they saw a half dozen people come running through the trees after the ratfolks. The lead runner shouted "Stop them!" in Ghallian and then they themselves skidded to a halt. It was something like this:

Teake's Teeth, Party ||     ratfolk with corpse ||      Blonde smoothies

Sidenote: "Blonde smoothies" is what Ashley called them and it's as good a name as any.

A middle-aged man called out from the group of newcomers and said that his name was Léon and thanked the party for stopping the ratlings. They stole his auntie on their way to perform the funerary ceremony! But also oh my what a large group you have and have you come from across the river?

Edmond answered that yes, they had come from Lenticot and asked if that meant that they came from this side of the river. Indeed they did! Léon and his family were on their way to the river so that their dear auntie might be close to the promised land in death.

Party had a lot of questions now about the river, and the "promised land", and what these people were doing out here. They lived here, they were loyal to the king, and dearly hoped to be able to one day cross the river and live in the promised land. The PCs also privately wondered if these people were actually the same kind of creatures that they had fought before.

Léon in turn was curious what such a large group was doing across the river. Normally their former countrymen across the river only burn the lands, never venturing into the wood.

Sidenote: There was a lot of talking here, it was really wonderful. I'm late on this one and tired so cliff notes is that Léon wanted the "ratlings" to execute them for taking his auntie's corpse, the party wondered if these folks were the monsters they had previously fought, and the smoothies were very excited to meet the party and learn more about them.

"Why do you want help the ratlings anyway, they're just dirty meat."

Claus indignantly exclaimed that these were sentient (sapient?) creatures and they were NOT food!!

This time it was Léon's turn to be disgusted. "Food? Food?! They are not food!"
"You just said they were!"
"I said MEAT, they are not food. How revolting!"

Jehan was a young man when Ghallia fell but he was from the south and so familiar with these lands. His mind was racing, trying to figure out if any of what they were saying made sense. He had never heard of a king in Ghallia. When they told him that their ruler was King Thessel the XV he became even more confused. The XV? And why did they seem to reverse the sun?

Jehan: "And what lineage does King Thessel the XV hail from? What house?"

The blonde smoothies seemed genuinely confused. "What's a lineage?" Jehan explained a bit but they still didn't grasp it. King Thessel was king and the kings and queens of his family always were.

Eventually the smoothies left after a veiled implication from Barthelm that these ratfolk would have a "cultural misunderstanding" of their own with the party. Niala and her cousins took their auntie and carried her back the way they came while Léon called out a final farewell and a promise to tell King Thessel of their visit, that he might welcome them in the capital! Of course Barthelm gave his name as "Polde from Lenticot" so we'll see.

The party had no desire to stay in this spot so they decided they wanted to push on. Ashley refued to lead them anywhere however until the party had extracted something from Edward and his crew. "You promise food, safety, don't get anything. Half barter is no barter, not right, have to finish the barter."

The party generally settled on the idea of meatshields (because of course). They were able to convince all but one of Edward's party to accompany them into Guillaume le Galapiat's "well". Percival, the holdout, was too scared to go into the place that "Crazy Brian" went into so instead he volunteered to serve as an advance scout through the woods.

Satisfied that a complete barter was executed Ashley took up her position ahead of the horses and led the group the next five or six miles through a rapidly darkening wood. They arrive at a small group of dilapidated wooden buildings with a stone church in the center. They could smell the rain on the air so quickly moved forward to investigate.

Most of the buildings surprisingly had intact rooves, despite the general decripitude and overgrown nature of the site. They scouted a barn where they could house their horses and made their way to the church. It was squat, a single room, but made of stone. There didn't seem to be much in side but the door was intact and there was still some wood from the pews.

old church from dodge city in late 1800s
Like this church but squatter and made of stone. This is apparently from Dodge City.

Satisfied that they weren't in immediate danger they packed all their horses in the dilapidated barn and split the posse between there and the church. They sent Edward and his crew out into the woods to keep a perimeter. It was moderately effective.

Barthelm and Jehan took turns posting up in the top of the barn to keep and ear out for anything suspicious. They heard terrible animal noises followed by ratfolk screeching during one of their watches. Realizing that the commotion wasn't getting any closer, Barthelm tried to go back to sleep and suggested that eveyone else do the same. Shortly the sounds faded to gurgles and then quieted altogether.

Sidebar: The little goobers didn't even have names yet but they still count for a death tag all the same.

Later the three surviving ratfolk (Edward, "eye-goober", and Percival) came knocking on the dor of the church. They didn't use the special knock that Tenkos had established but they let the drenched, terrified rats in anyway. Ashley scolded them in their language (or at least it sounded that way) and everyone again tried to rest.

In the morning the rain was going full bore, heavy and fat. Viggo (or Tenkos) noticed the ratfolk eating some kind of meat to which Ashley confirmed "Yep, we still taste best."

She showed them how to move the church's altar and asked if there was anything else she could tell them. Barthelm asked if Ashley wouldn't come with them into the well but didn't get very far.

"I'm an old lady! Smart, not dead! Not going to be dead either. Our barter was for information and I give you all I know. Even gave you where we live! But not going down there like Edward, he's not smart, won't be old man. Maybe you get old though, try not to die in that hole."

And with that she left, quickly disappearing into the rain. One of them remarked that she was "the most trustworthy rat." The players were geniunely sorry to see her go and at least one said that they'd better see her again! Since I follow Papers and Pencils encounter table design it's certainly possible if that 7 comes up.

Ended the session late morning on the 8th day of their expedition, poised to head into what they believe to be the laboratory of Guillaume le Galapiat, aka Wilhelm the Wily.

Last time the party bartered with two ratfolk to serve as guides, lost one to horrible animals in the night, traded away their crab pearl for even more info, and generally got waylaid by the weather.

This time they had all sorts of smooth sailing. They traveled west three hexes without incident. Ashley the ratfolk was able to keep pace despite being dismounted because of her familiarity with the terrain.

That night, their sixth in Ghallia-That-Fell, Edmond decided he wanted to make sure that no one had become too used to being in that deadly place. During his watch he ran a "readiness drill" to test everyone's responses. Reactions were mixed.

Teake's Teeth were professionals and wasted no time in arraying themselves appropriately.

Tinslee and Therese were scared and unhappy.

Tenkos was irate at having been woken up for nothing.

Jehan went back to sleep, Walter was frightened.

Claus pointed his pistol at Edmond and started running thought experiments on the best way to ambush a group. Maybe if you mind controlled the leader...

Claus' player asked what the reaction from someone would be if / when they came back alive from deep in Ghallia-That-Fell. Told him that he would have to find out because as far as they are aware they are the first ones ever to cross into the forest. Even the servants of the Princes are meant to stay on the crispy shore and make sure everything stays burnt.

"Crispy shore? Is that canonical?" - Edmond's player

Initially no, but then... yes "crispy shore" is now canonical, decided it's something the common folk say. Thanks Edmond for continuing our proud naming tradition and helping me say yes.

How is Viggo doing? Anything that's upsetting him? He seemed pretty happy dancing in the mud and watching the giant bonfire.

Edmond: We are basically in hell.

Viggo: Let me tell you about the constant hell that we have been going through since Teutonia. Have you ever heard of Crossroads?
Edmond's seen some shit too, he was not as impressed.

Jehan is back in Ghallia-That-Fell, how's he doing?
"Like coming home finally and finding out your house has burned down. It's home but not, everything is so different and so much more dangerous."

Tenkos is surprised at how easy this has all been and loves his new rat friend!
Claus: "Ditto."

They continued on south and east towards 0425. Ashley called out as quietly as she could to get someone to dismount and approach her. She pointed out a squat tree with a bunch of round, bright red fruits on it. "Never seen one like that before."

The rest of the party came over and they debated what to do. They settled on Jehan shooting at it with his crossbow. Tenkos told Agathe, one of the Teeth's archers, to do the same and they made a little contest out of it. Jehan bullseyed one of the fruits! It burst in a shiny shower of sparkly sprinkles! Agathe missed.

PCs went closer to it to investigate and it vanished when they got just outside of reach! Reappeared a few seconds later in a different direction about thirty feet away.

Claus: "Trees never move, fact!"

Claus was now committed to touching this tree. He broke into a run and charged at it! He got nearly upon it before it vanished again. This time he was able to observe the branches and fruits all suck up into a pole and dip into the earth before popping back out again a few seconds later about thirty feet away. "It's a mole tree!"

In addition to "mole tree" they also theorized that the fruits were the eyes of a creature or that the whole thing was a giant lure for some awful work beast (not mutually exclusive with the eyes theory).

Some folks wanted to just keep moving, Claus wanted to charge it at least one more time. He also proposed a plan where they surrounded it at around 30 feet distance, one person would charge it, then when it went down and up again someone should be right near it. He was unable to sell it.

Viggo: "We have enough scary things waiting for us in Wilhelm the Wily's lab... but let's have Jehan light this thing on fire first before we go."

Edmond and Jehan were not all about this "burn the tree plan". Viggo was incredibly excited about the fire. Claus wanted to have everyone surround it at 30 feet and then one person charges it, it pops up, and someone

In the end Tenkos commanded Agathe to shoot the tree with a lit arrow, she did and hit it! The tree caught fire, the fire spread to the branches, and then once it got near all the red fruits they turned into quite the beautiful (and noisy!) fireworks show. In addition to all the loud noises and sparkling showers in the twilight, Claus got hit with what he felt was an echo of magical force as the tree and its fruit burned and popped.

The fireworks show was interrupted by a burst of chittering ratfolk sounds and exclamations of shock from behind them. Ashley turned around with an "Oh shit!" and we ended the session.

Camp Setup: Horses gathered in the center, tied to trees or stakes. Rest of camp arrayed in a circle around them. Light discipline, no campfires or other lights.

Last time the party was attacked by monstrous humanoids, burned the fallen, and was approached by some ratfolk in the dead of night.

"Think of the lives you're saving being out here!" - Barthelm, trying to convince Edmond that it's good they're in Ghallia-That-Fell
"You're two for two now" - Edmond, momentarily placated

The ratfolk that had called out approached to the edge of the firelight to parley. It stopped when the horses in the center of the camp started freaking out. They said they could help in return for considerations.

The party asked about finding a "wizard tower" but got a negative in response.

"No, no tower. upside down, tower in the ground."
"A well you mean?"
Some back and forth with the hidden ratfolk, then: "Okay yeah, a well!"

The negotiating ratfolk also casually mentioned "them" but wouldn't elaborate without an arrangement. Ratfolk then did a weird rat whistle and a pair of rats cam scurrying from the center of the camp. They crawled up ratfolk's arms and seemed to share a quick conversation. Probably around now the second ratfolk approached from their hiding spot in the trees.

The players switched to Teutonic to discuss the situation, figuring the ratfolk wouldn't understand it any pressure than the party understood the chittering tongue of their visitors. Worth noting that meant none of the party's mercenaries understood them either. Edmond was cautious about trusting this thing but in the end deferrer to the group.

Barthelm tried to pressure the ratfolk into accepting a single dagger for all of the information they wanted. Ratfolk offered back a pretty confident number for just how many daggers they had in their camp. Sgt Teake whispered to Tenkos that it was at least as many as her soldiers had.

Barthelm considered, and then offered up one of their two remaining bear traps! Tenkos was not happy, but at least it wasn't the fancy spiked one. The second ratfolk's eyes widened considerably in appreciation. She nodded, "Done!", and walked right up to Barthelm. She hocked a gigantic wad of phlegm into her hand and held it out expectantly. Barthelm deferred to Tenkos, who shook the ratfolk's hand and then wiped it on Barthelm's back.

Barthelm then introduced himself and the rest of the group. The one who had shaken Tenkos' hand said her name was Ashley and introduced the one who first made contact as Arthur.

Hey do you know Brian?
"Which Brian?" - Ashley the Ratfolk
Barthelm does Brian voice
"Oh crazy Brian?" - Ashley the Ratfolk
Yeah that one!
"Yeah, he alive?" - Ashley the Ratfolk
Why what happened to him?
"Oh we haven't seen him since he went into the well." - Ashley the Ratfolk
Uh are we going to the same well as Brian went into?
"Yup!" - Ashley the Ratfolk

Sidebar: The fact that they remember Brian's voice a full two years later is a real testament to the man who played him as a special guest way back. Thanks amigo.

Oh shit what was the wizard's name we were looking for? Could he be related to Wilhelm? The rest of the party explained to Jehan a little bit more about Wilhelm the Wily.

"We only get away from him with our lives because of how lucky we were!" - Claus
"Yeah we luckily came into possession of some terrible disease balls that could be considered weapons of mass destruction..." - Barthelm

Jehan wondered if those balls were the same awful things that maybe caused the plague?! They all tried to figure out if it was possible that the worm sacks were somehow the cause of the plague and why anyone would even want to do that again. It seemed like their general consensus was that it probably wasn't related.

Claus made a point of asking how long they had been following the group so that they would know what would happen if the ratfolk betrayed the party.

Ashley: "Oh yeah I like my head, and my belly!" The ratfolk both seemed sincere in their desire not to be murdered with magic.

Sidebar: Fun tidbit, Claus had already used his murder spells at this point. It was a good bluff.

Sidesidebar: Except that scroll of summon, I guess. Who knows, he's crazy.

Barthelm followed the ratfolk (like a shadow!) after they left the camp for the night but they just went a hundred yards or so, hid themselves, and went to sleep. Everyone else (except the watch) did the same, and they passed an uneventful rest of the evening.

The morning brought with it the pair of rats running into the camp yelling about a flash flood from all the heavy rain! Fortunately for the party they had camped on something of a hill so the warning gave them enough time to avoid any real damage.

While they were waiting on hill for the flash flood to die down, the party remembered the name of the wizard whose laboratory they were trying to find, "Guillaume le Galapiat."

Sidebar: The players are wondering about if this matches up to Wilhelm. I told James that Barthelm knows fake French and fake German, he can figure it out. He asked if he could do a google translate (of course! I don't care about metagaming), and his face when he clicked it was so delightful. "William the Rascal" indeed!

The ratfolk recommended heading west for a few days and then turning south toward the "well" in order to avoid "them and their city." The mud made that impractical for at least a day so they passed the day on their relatively dry hill.

Except Viggo. Viggo ran down the hill and started rolling around in the mud, hooting and hollering for joy.

The ratfolk went out into the woods to sleep and the party settled into their typical camp routine. During the middle of the night, on Barthelm's watch, he heard a cacophony of mixed animal noises, including shrieking and gurgling squeaks.

Sidebar: James rolled an 8 when I asked him to roll a d8! My god that thing in the woods!

The whole camp went on alert, listening and waiting. Ashley came running out from between the trees towards the camp and shouted "Run!" Claus leapt into action, ran forward, and scooped her up to make it easier to run.

Barthelm wanted to stay by the fire. Edmond had heard these noises during his first foray but never encountered whatever made them. Viggo was ALL ABOUT staying near the fire.

"God dammit Edmond you survived in here!" - Barthelm
"Only because I ran faster than the others." - Edmond

So they waited it out, camp bristling with weapons and watchful eyes. The wrenching squeaks had trailed off quite quickly and eventually the other frantic animal noises quieted down and disappeared.

Ashley, for what it's worth, seemed to appreciate Claus' gesture. She mentioned that they got attacked by animal servants of the Mound Witch.

"Who's the mound witch?"
"Oh, she travels around the wood and lives in a big mound made out of dirt!"
"Not sand", asked Tenkos?

The remaining ratfolk muttered in her language for a moment, considering possible translations, and came back with a matter of fact "No, it's dirt." She added that the Mound Witch would reach out her pale hand from the dirt, always asking for "god stuff" and rewarding those who complied. The ratfolk don't like to barter with her because a) she doesn't seem to like what she brings and b) her animals all hate them.

Sidebar: I am not sure what the implication about sand was here. I am probably missing a reference.

Sidesidebar: Days later I finally got it and am very upset. Dammit Sugarplum.

The ratfolk reiterated her suggestion to head west a ways before going south. There was a more direct path but this way they would be able to avoid "them." Barthelm asked about "them," Ashley asked for another dagger but Barthelm took out the crab pearl instead!

"No more bartering, just tell us everything!" - Barthelm

She asked what it do, he put it into some water, and when ten minutes later the first crab came out... Amazement! She used the skinning knife Arthur had gotten from Jehan to cut into the shell and taste it, grinned in satisfaction, and immediately spit into her hand again and held it out. Maybe Tenkos went right for it this time, accepting his role, can't quite recall.

So she broke down "them." There's a lot of them, they look like the other smoothskins, and the blonde ones are the most numerous.

This last bit brought a gasp and a "Are the blonde ones really big?!" but no, not really. There's also sneaky ones that don't taste good and probably some other ones too. They're mostly in the city but she was surprised that the party hadn't encountered any yet, they do come out this direction a lot. She also said the ratfolk don't tend to go to the city directly because the people there don't always barter nice and don't taste good either.

Offhand mention by someone of something like "Oh and are you delicious?!" in what was probably supposed to be a threatening manner but Ashely just agreed. "Oh yeah, we taste the best."

"I don't trust a city in this plagueland." - Claus

Theories about what could be in the city. Are they human? Are they less than? Should they go there? In the end they decided to stick to Ashley's route west to avoid the city.

Last time the party began their expedition into Ghallia-That-Fell with a large entourage, declined to be tempted away from their path, got passed in the night, and lost a bunch of food (but no people!) to an awful thunderstorm.

Two players had to run a little late today which meant that the party direction was swapped decidedly around from last session. With Tenkos and Claus in control there was no telling what buttons they'd push and levers they'd pull! Unfortunately Barthelm came back before they could really start poking...

(-_-)

They were getting set to pack up for the day after long hard progress through the wind hammered woods when the rearguard sent up a shout of warning. Four thick, muscled creatures came bounding out of the woods behind them on all fours. Their jaws were extended and full of teeth and their blood vessels nearly burst from their flesh. Muscles bulged and strained as the four hurled themselves towards the nearest members of the expedition.

hasty pen sketch outline in blue with purple veins
roar claws and teeth and veins and horns
They were close despite the party's vigilance because of the press of trees all around. After a quick look at the creatures, Barthelm asked if Edmond was yelling in recognition. He surely was!

Sidenote: I initially said they'd have to ask Edmond's player, then figured they'd just confirm after the fact so gave the immediate players the info. This was wrong because it assumed that Edmond's player would definitely have shared that information. Shouldn't have done that. Sorry :(

Normally we'd do initiative by sides and re-roll every round but with 20+ in the PCs party that was a little unwieldy. We did by group with no re-roll and came up with:

Enemy / monsters -> personal retainers (Lucien & Phillip) -> PCs -> teamsters -> Teake's Teeth

All four went after Margot and her horse as the closest of the three rearguard infantry, killing her immediately in their initial assault and severely wounding her horse. Teake's Teeth collectively roared in hurt but Margot's partner Cyril was utterly consumed by rage and devastation.

Phillip immediately lost his shit and bolted for the woods. He would have been lost to the party if not for Claus' timely warning that the creatures were hunters and would chase him down if he were alone. Score one for quick thinking. Lucien on the other hand went in swinging, albeit unsuccessfully.

Claus exploded one of the creatures with a tremendous magic missile, pink rays arcing from his hands to blast a hole through its torso. Where it landed the fluids leaked out and sizzled the leaf litter. Tenkos tossed some holy water, hoping to get lucky, but couldn't connect. Barthelm was hesitant to fire into the melee given the high potential for allied collateral damage.

Sidenote: James described the creature to Viggo's player, who had just joined the session, as "lickers from Resident Evil but with a Venom symbiote and acid blood."

licker from resident evil
LICKATUNG
When the Teeth got their turn they swarmed, killing another of the creatures and wounding a third. One of the remaining ones grabbed Margot's corpse and started running. The other bit her horse's neck clean through, dropping the head on the ground and chewing what it could. Almost everyone bum-rushed the closest one and whoever was left took pot shots at the fleeing monster (two 1s for damage), including a shot from Claus' pistol that erupted with a crack and scared off all the birds for half a mile. Finally they caught it on their horses and finished it off.

Sidenote: I screwed up when I rolled this and only rolled 1 HD of HP. They should have had more. This may have gone quite differently if that were the case, so fair warning to the players it should have been harder.

Barthelm mused that at this point he was probably the most responsible party member and that fact gave the party pause. They discussed how prior to dying Viggo was probably the most practical and responsible but now? They don't quite know what to make of him yet.

"Original Viggo very trustworthy, new Viggo oh my god." - Claus

They regrouped. They considered pressing on but the dark was coming fast. The Teeth gathered up bodies and Viggo started building a pair of pyres. No one who was still alive had been injured so they were still unsure what effect the creatures might have.

Tenkos approached the most intact creature and began to methodically cut into its flesh. It's bones were sturdy, thick, and wrapped in powerful muscles. None of the cuts into the flesh produced any acidic sizzle but his dagger did get blunted a bit in the creature's mouth.

Someone asked if it had teeth like a baboon and you know what? Baboons have awesome teeth. Kind of like that, but way more canines.

OMNOMNOMNOM
When Tenkos got to the creature's abdomen he started having problems with his makeshift autopsy tool. It looked like there was some kind of caustic, viscous liquid in a sack connected to it's throat. The faceless doctor's dagger was useless at this point, pitted and dull.

Sidenote: Vegas (Claus' player) shared his theory during combat that these creatures (and Edmond) are dnd-ified versions of the Abomination from Darkest Dungeon. The autopsy apparently only made him believe it more. As a rule I do not comment on player theories but it always brings me joy when they have them.

Tenkos gave Sergeant Teake the go ahead after he had finished his examination (Claus furiously scribbling notes over his shoulder) and she solemnly began removing canines from the creatures and distributing one to each of her soldiers.

They reverently placed Margot's body on her pyre and dumped the creatures onto the other one (with Margot's horse). Barthelm was concerned about the noise they made and the light of a funeral pyre but they figured anything and everything would already know they were there. He tried to find somewhere they could be a little more concealed but had a hard time in darkness so they setup camp a bit away from the pyres.

Cyril kept a vigil over Margot's pyre from the moment it was lit. Viggo appreciated the massive flames from both pyres at a respectful distance. The heavy winds and wet wood combined to create an awful lot of smoke, obscuring visibility.

A. Tenkos, Timothee (I1), Indira (I2)
B. Viggo, Yvonne (I3), Basile (I4)

It was during the third watch that Viggo heard a rustle in the bushes beyond his sight followed by hushed whispers in an unknown tongue. LINK went about it waking everyone up while LINK kept their bow at the ready. Viggo waited, unsure of what to expect, when a high-pitched voice issued hesitantly out of the woods in Ghallian:

"P-p-parley? No hurting, no murder yes?"

Viggo did his best to assure the voice that yes, there need not be any murder or hurting. It said it was going to approach and once more entreated Viggo to "no murder". Viggo could hear it rustling closer but also caught several flashes of eye shine as the being moved between trees.

Finally it came into the light, a half-size humanoid covered in fur, its whiskers twitching side to side and its hands all the way up. Yup, ratfolk. Claus and Barthelm exchanged a knowing glance, "Here we go again."

Sidenote: There was a brief debate about which character would know Brian the Ratman from way back. That was the adventure that Heidi and Helga both died in way back in Session 6-7, a full THIRTY-THREE sessions ago. So yup, just Barthelm and Claus left. Mad love to Brian the Ratman's player for the two hour conversation we had hashing out their culture and motivations.

Last time the party bought a house, outfitted it with lab & library, and planned out what retainers and gear they would need to head into Ghallia-That-Fell.

We opened up with the return of Jehan after his disappearance following the chaotic events in a certain Stilton basement. He accompanied the rest of the party to Prince Fabian's residence to air a grievance of Edmond's.

Edmond was offended that he was not provided with chainmail in order to be properly equipped for the upcoming journey. Majordomo Antens, stuttering more and more as he grew angry and flustered, countered that the prince had already expanded incredible sums equipped the party with a score of horses and a month's worth of supplies. In the process, he let slip that he considered this a hopeless errand and was trying to minimize the prince's outlays.

Unfortunately Antens' indignation combined with Edmond's dogged persistence was enough to draw the attention of Captains Robineau and Lajoie as they passed by. The prince's insperable spy masters merely had to raise an eyebrow at the situation for Majordomo Antens to acquiesce to Edmond's demand for chainmail before quickly scurrying off.

Barthelm took the opportunity to press the captains for any information on the disappearances in the Dwarfgrave Mountains, specifically the presence of any worms. Captain Robineau (or was it Lajoie?) confirmed that the disappearances were indeed confined to the northern pass but did not know anything more because none of their agents have yet returned from investigations deeper into the mountains. So far none of the attacks have left any trace of bodies or survivors but have left everything else.

Jehan then asked about any possibility of resurgent death cults in the area. Robineau and Lajoie each raised an eyebrow but didn't know anything specific. They asked Jehan for anything else he could share and when he said that the name he knew was "Duvan'Ku" both of their eyebrows shot up. They had only heard the name as a bogeyman from ages past but Jehan's suggestion that they may be resurgent was very alarming.

"Unfortunately we do-
-not have many assets left in Teutonia.
-Especially after our losses in the Dwarfgrave Mountains and-
-sending word to pull back to Prince Florent's domain-
-for monitoring. However we will see-
-what we can do." Captains Robineau & Lajoie

They arrayed themselves in a column on the parade ground the next morning. Sergeant Liliane Teake, leader of Teake's Teeth mercenary company, introduced herself and her soldiers to the party. The sergeant herself was missing quite a few teeth but she made up for it with a necklace strung full of them. Mostly the teeth were animals but there were a few notable human teeth. The rest of her squad bore similar necklaces (although were not as bereft of teeth).

The crew decided that Tenkos would in charge of the new retainers and setup an overall chain of command for when his player couldn't make it. That put Edmond at the head for this session, and they rolled out (after much glaring and side-eye from Edmond to Majordomo Antens).

Departing the castle was a serious production. Prince Fabian gave a short speech expressing hope for a successful return but emphasizing a return. Archers lined the battlements above the gate as the drawbridge lowered slowly to extend across the gap, finally reaching the bridge. A double line of pikes preceded another double line of crossbows as they slowly advanced onto the bridge. The party could smell the heavy scent of boiling oil on the rampart above as they passed through the gate. They also noticed that as the advance party moved on the bridge about half of them focused their pikes and aim towards the water rather than the ashen shore ahead.

When the bridge guards reached the other end they spread out into a semi circle, split between watching the distant treeline and the water behind them. Edmond saw their caution but made a point of spurring his horse Devoi through the narrow gap they left and leading the entire expedition confidently ahead. He made sure to continue this pace until they were past the treeline. The advance guard, for their part, started to work their way back across the bridge as soon as the last party member had past their ranks.

Once they had entered the forest proper, Edmond called a halt. He made it clear to everyone that if things were to go south that they should leave him behind. Barthelm countered that they do whatever it takes for their friends, but Edmond was insistent.

Edmond flashed the chains circling his waist and noted that "I'm a little bit attached to mine."

For all the talk of Ghallia-That-Fell being an awful place the first day was sunny and easy. They noted the normal woodland animal sounds and headed generally south. Daily travel procedure is:

Check weather (Pocket Dimension)
Determine Travel Distance
Decide travel direction (players)
Event check per hex (d6)
Camp Setup
Event check per watch

Sidenote: I opted not to bother with "getting lost" rolls because I didn't want to have to track where the party actually was versus where they thought they were. It seems a shame to lose that potential for lost time and shenanigans though. Maybe I can add it in as a "you wander around the hex" instead of "you go the wrong direction."

Their travel was uneventful for the first few miles (Hex 1418) but they came upon some sort of wispy gunk attached to the pines above the gully they were traveling through (1419), flapping in the breeze. It was hard to tell at the distance exactly what was hanging off the tree other than it was white and lightweight. A prominent theory was that it was ghostly related.

Claus immediately wanted to investigate shit and bring stuff back!  Edmond's clearly defined position since before the beginning of this expedition (that he opposed in the first place) was that bringing back anything extra from the plaguelands is a terrible idea. Terrible! Claus sputtered and fumed! Barthelm brokered a compromise whereby they don't worry about finding additional treasure until AFTER they have secured the means to save Prince Fabian's niece Noëlle. They pressed on.

They circled the camp up around the horses, tied to trees or staked to the ground after finding a somewhat raised area that would hopefully give them more of a  warning if something approached. They debated whether they should use lots of fires to "light this shit up" or try to keep a minimal presence. "We've got too many people to hide", but Barthelm also liked the idea of not drawing a lot of attention. It was at this point that Edmond revealed his horrific scar from his previous venture into the plaguelands.

"Is that a bite?!" - Barthelm
"It is." - Edmond

From this point on Barthelm decided that Edmond was definitely a werewolf but also was bit by the chain so must be a werechain. They've got ~20 days until the full moon before they can test that theory.

They debated whether the possible threats were intelligent or not as the decider for whether they should make a bright camp or not. Barthelm questioned more into Edmond's story and the former soldier described how his party had crossed the ashen shore into the wood. The creatures that attacked fell upon them suddenly during the night and their fires and sentries did not seem to deter them. The battle was such chaos that he couldn't even tell how many of them there were, only that they were wild and lethal.

In the end they went for a blacked out camp. Teake's Teeth volunteered to take the watches, two per watch. The party decided that one of them would also stand watch, just in case, and came up with the following:

A. Edmond, Timothee (I1), Indira (I2)
B. Jehan, Yvonne (I3), Basile (I4)
C. Barthelm, Margot (I5), Sacha (I6)
D. Lucien (for Claus), Rosaline (P1), Cyril (P2)

Sidenote: I = Infantry, P = polearm, A = archer, T = teamster.

The Teeth went about pitching tents and setting up a basic perimeter. One of the players said "I get my tent out too" and I had to remind them that I gave them a heads up about the Teeth having tents and not to be surprised when the party had none. Barthelm opined that it was better not to be locked into a tent with only one way out anyway.

Their first night in Ghallia-That-Fell was uneventful. Edmond spent his watch getting to know Timothee and Indira. Not only were the pair the cooks for Teake's Teeth, but they had joined the sergeant at the same time as their sister Rosaline.

The dawn of the second day (start 1220) brought with it a heavy fog, obscuring vision but thankfully not causing and navigational delays. The party progressed doggedly west after packing up camp, moving from 1220 four hexes to 0820. They rotated watch the second night so that everyone would get a chance at uninterrupted sleep, with the order as:

B. Jehan, Yvonne (I3), Basile (I4)
C. Barthelm, Margot (I5), Sacha (I6)
D. Lucien (for Claus), Rosaline (P1), Cyril (P2)
A. Edmond, Timothee (I1), Indira (I2)

During Claus' watch he heard sounds of a group of things moving thru the woods nearby, probably no larger than a person but a number of them. Rosaline and Cyril quietly woke up the rest of the Teeth while Claus sat still, eyes closed to better follow the sounds.

After determining that the creatures were continuing on their path away from the camp Claus resumed smoking his pipe. In the morning Edmond had a nice chat with Claus (and everyone else) about maybe waking EVERYONE up next time instead of filling them in after the fact.

The third day barely dawned as the heavy fog gave way to lashing, thunderous, rainstorm. All thoughts of progress were replaced by a pressing need to find shelter before the driving wetness worked its way into their rations and spoiled it with mold and mildew.

They lost the whole day wandering around trying to get out of the rain and failing (despite two woodsmen at 5/6 and 3/6 skill). Everyone lost a whopping 9 rations and 9 feed for the horses. They avoided being struck by lightning and managed to take advantage of a couple of downed trees and branches to put together a makeshift shelter going into the night. We will see if they fare any better during the night next time. Next session will start at the beginning of the night in 0820, storm raging.

Sidenote: I've been running weather off the seasonal weather tables in Daniel Sell's very handy Pocket Dimension because I haven't gotten my stuff together enough to make a proper hex weather table, also by Daniel Sell. Maybe the results I roll as they go can feed into the generation of a hex weather table.

Decaying Lands 38: Accounting Homework

PCs Present & Played:

Barthelm Schade, Specialist (James)
Claus Drexol, Magic-User (Vegas)
  Phillip Bachman, linklad
  Lucien Courtet, infantryman
Tenkos, Cleric [plague doctor kit] (Sugarplum)
Viggo Pyreborn, ?? (Peanut Butter)

Last time the party met with Prince Fabian, heard an unexpected offer, and decided to (eventually) head into Ghallia-That-Fell.

This time we spent the whole session trying to figure out how that would work. We emailed a bunch beforehand, I made a sheet to help figure out lab, library, and retainer cost, and I grabbed James Young's tracker for his game (can't find the original link sorry) to tweak to make encumbrance a snap. Still wasn't quite enough.

Seriously we spent the whole session planning, I have no events to relate because we did very little in character. I didn't even describe any local cuisine specialties!

That's not to say there wasn't progress though. Encumbrance tracker is filled out for PCs; they bought a house with rooms for everyone, a lab, and a library; and they figured out how many retainers they were going to bring. I was surprised because it was a lot! They are going with:

• (2) Archers
• (6) Infantry
• (2) Polearm Fighters
• (1) Sergeant (Cavalry)
• (2) Teamsters

Total cost is around ~1700 sp a month (paid in advance), so it's a very good thing they stopped in Stilton on the way.

I missed the part in LotFP Rules & Magic that said the minimum for mercs to come with equipment was 20 and said I'd they got 10+1 Sergeant that it would be an established merc squad. Having the minimum for a preformed company be 20 but needing a sergeant at 10 doesn't sound good to me anyway.

Vegas commented that getting all the hirelings made him feel more like the bad guys because now they've got this big retinue of mooks. "It makes me feel more like an imperial officer." Add to that the fact that they will all have horses courtesy of Prince Fabian and damnnn that's a lot of noisy tromping in the forest. Despite the horses, Edmond was upset (over email) that when he asked for arms and armor the Majordomo only gave him leather. I am very much looking forward to playing that conversation out!

Once they had retainers and house sorted, Tenkos and Claus for down to the business of crafting useful consumables. That's when we realized it's horrible. Unless I misunderstood, this is how it works for potions:
  1. Have a lab of minimum 1000 sp * Spell Level (SL) value
  2. Potions take 1d6 * SL days @ 50 sp a day
  3. Decide how many days you will spend before rolling how long it takes, spend that money
  4. Roll to see the actual days required
  5. If you spent less than that, you fail everything is wasted. This is all fine with me so far, except the part where failure has a 10% curse chance but close enough.
  6. Roll a save vs Magic if you were successful
  7. If you SUCCEED your lab loses 1d20 * 100 sp value
  8. If you FAIL your lab loses 2d20 * 100 sp value.
  9. If you roll a 1 there's an explosion (this is fine)

Look at 7 and 8 again. Tenkos / Claus spent 3 days (150 sp) to make a potion of cure light wounds and then lost 400 sp of value from their lab that was only worth 1000 sp to begin with. 550 sp for a cure light wounds potion and that's a pretty optimal outcome considering the dice.

Like I said, maybe I did this wrong but it reads wonky as hell. I changed the d20 to a d6 (or something) at the table but still didn't like it. Got some more drastic tweaks in mind for another post.

Noticing that the amount in 7/8 doesn't scale it seems like the intent is that it's not worth it to create low level items and it's only really good to make high level stuff when you are a baller. It seems like active punishment to craft lower level items and only barely worth it for higher level stuff. Maybe I am being too stingy with treasure?

Regardless, as written this isn't the feel I want. I think it would be cool for the players to have some roots (even in several places). I want them to feel like they can invest their treasure in magical creations to help them overcome the next challenges and I want them to feel like spending time to do that is appealing (because time is a valuable resources). I had some after session chats with Vegas and Sugarplum about my ideas to change it and think I have something I'll be happy with. We'll see.

Next session will feature our party venturing across the river into Ghallia-That-Fell, a place that hasn't been explored for 50 years.

And if it doesn't then I'm going to blow up the city, rocks fall everyone dies, and we're all going to play Troika!.
